Dr. Charleen “Charlie” Case

I am an assistant professor at the University of Michigan within the management and organizations area. I apply micro-organizational, social psychological, and evolutionary approaches to investigate how humans navigate social hierarchies and manage cross-hierarchy relationships. In my research, I examine how our deep-seated motives for status, affiliation, and kin care affect the way we think about, feel about, and behave toward others. In particular, my work examines how our motives drive our social decision-making and interpersonal behavior within leader-follower interactions, hierarchy-bridging coalitions, and mentoring relationships. Moreover, much of my work examines when, why, and how our motives either promote or undermine effective group functioning and group member wellbeing.

Current Team

  • I am a second year Ph.D. student. I examine workplace relationships with a focus on workplace friendship, mentorship, and strategic alliance formation. Using theoretical and methodological inspiration from various disciplines, I explore how aspects of the individual (e.g., gender, social motives) and aspects of the work environment (e.g., power asymmetries, leader visions) influence interpersonal dynamics.

Laurel Detert, Ph.D. Student

  • I am a senior BBA student and have been involved in research for just over two years. I am interested in behavioral research in management and marketing as well as research in DEI topics such as anti-minority sentiment. My senior thesis focuses on how anti-Asian sentiment as a result of COVID-19 affects individuals' product choices and perceptions of minority groups.

Hana Yu, Research Assistant

  • I am a senior BBA student. I have found my work on behavioral, gender, and ancestral effects on hierarchical structures interesting, and am working to utilize that understanding as I research management of (and for) creativity. With an interest in the fine arts and advertising, my developing senior thesis will focus on analyzing variables that affect the creation and performance of creativity, and I am working through a design to test them via 3D modeling.
